A well meaning manmade attempt to create new areas of marine reef habitat have, some 30 years after they were created, resulted in massive areas of Florida’s coastline and reef habitat being devastated.

The plan to dump millions of used tyres a mile off shore has lead to huge areas of seabed being rendered uninhabitable for fish and corals. The tyre reefs have also created huge barriers to the expansion of existing reefs in the area. Tyres have broken loose from their moorings and are being washed up along the coastline in their hundreds.

A full scale salvage operation is expected to take until 2010 to complete and will cost $3.4 million.
