A Welsh aquarium is looking to employ a mermaid to work with its sharks, rays and conger eels.
The successful applicant for the position at Rhyl SeaQuarium in North Wales is expected to entertain the public by getting "really wet and wild" in a "specially designed mermaid costume complete with tail", says aquarium manager Colette Macdonald.

Regardless of being able to breathe naturally underwater, the mermaid must be able to use cumbersome diving equipment including a cylinder and regulator. Certification to a minimum of PADI Open Water or an equivalent is required.

The mermaid must also understand that the job is not all glamour, handing out food as the centre of attention of both fellow marine creatures and the watching public.

The mermaid will be expected to do some general housework such as tank maintenance and cleaning and will need to be comfortable in doing other duties such as crawling about the floor, collecting the likes of dogfish eggs.

"We are looking for someone very special," says Paul Tyson, Head Aquarist and Display Manager. "We are prepared to look far and wide to find just the right mermaid!"

As such, no deadline has been stated for applications. However, mermaids are advised to apply quickly to avoid disappointment.
